Do victims and perpetrators hold similar views about the same conflict? Do gift givers think about their gifts in the same way that recipients do? My research investigates such questions, exploring the often-surprising reactions of people in these seemingly-scripted social exchange roles. I study both observer reactions to such gestures and the effects of these gestures on the actors performing them.
My research falls into three main lines: (1) Interpersonal transgressions and responses such as punishment, compensation, apologies, and forgiveness; (2) Asymmetrical perceptions of prosocial behavior; and (3) The intersection of power and justice motives.
